Biography

Born in Poggibonsi and raised in Colle Val d’Elsa, in the Siena province, her studies have always accompanied her life as an athlete: a graduate in linguistic mediation in the entrepreneurial tourism area and with a Master’s with textual competences for the promotion of tourism at the Siena University for Foreigners. In 2017, the “sprinter with glasses” won the gold in the 200 metres at the University Olympics after taking silver in the 100 metres, becoming the fifth Italian woman ever in both distances. In 2018, she set her personal best at 11.21 in the 100 m, the second best time ever in Italy, behind only record-holder Manuela Levorato. She arrived in Tokyo to compete in that 4x100 relay that had slipped through her fingers five years earlier at the last second, when her bags were practically packed. A qualification earned with grit and determination, in the last Doha World Championships where Irene, the last runner, finished in 42"90, a new Italian record.
