Biography
At Rio 2016, he reached his most ambitious goal with an Olympic gold medal in his race, the 1,500m freestyle. Then the breakthrough, with the gamble of working in parallel also in open water swimming. Having determined his choices at the last World Championships, he obtained the qualification for the Tokyo Games in the 10km. A perfectionist and a lover of challenges, outside the water he is passionate about basketball, the sport he would have taken up if his father Luca hadn't fostered his love for swimming. As a child his idol was Ian Thorpe, whom he met during his training period in Australia, and when watching him race he would dream of becoming a champion. Now in Tokyo 2020, Greg wants to do what nobody has ever managed to do: win both in the pool and in open water.
