Los Angeles 1932
X edition of the Summer Olympics
30 July - 14 August 1932
The Great Depression and the distance meant participation compared to European editions was somewhat reduced. However, the first Californian Games (there would be a second 52 years later) marked another important milestone in Olympic history. For the first time an Olympic Village to house the athletes was built. Italians (who reached Los Angeles on the liner Biancamano to New York and then crossed the United States by train) enjoyed their most successful Olympics ever finishing second, in terms of number of medals, just behind the hosts. One of medal winners was Luigi Beccali nicknamed "Ninà" in the 1,500 metres.
